    April 1, 2011 Volume 27, Number 6

  • Ascension Health developing best methods to reduce or eliminate birth complications

The vast majority of mothers in the U.S. give birth with no serious complications. But sometimes, things do go wrong in the delivery room.

Lincoln, Neb., leaders want everyone to have a medical home

Jaci Augustin of Lincoln, Neb., a maintenance worker without medical insurance, is receiving charity treatment for breast cancer. What she had trouble finding was routine care for high blood pressure.

Sober housing gives addicts a better chance to succeed

The letter starts out like this: "None of us, myself included, had any idea where we would go after our inpatient treatment. When Mercy (Recovery Center) asked me what my plan was after release from detox, I responded 'I have no idea, I have no place to go.'

Trinity Health plans to acquire Loyola University Health System

Trinity Health plans to acquire Loyola University Health System from Loyola University Chicago. The transaction is subject to continued due diligence and regulatory approvals.

Health system shifts will bring ministry new ethical issues, says lecturer

Reform will have a profound impact on how health care is delivered, and ministry ethicists must be able to keep pace with the changes.

Emory and Saint Joseph's of Atlanta to form joint operating company

Emory Healthcare and Saint Joseph's Hospital, both of Atlanta, plan to form a partnership later this year that Saint Joseph's top administrator said will help the organizations to "tackle the changing landscape of health care and create an even better and more innovative clinical care delivery model."

Physician gives $1 million to birth center

The Hospital of Saint Raphael in New Haven, Conn., has completed a $2.2 million renovation of its birth center, and has renamed the unit in honor of a philanthropic physician and his late wife.

Hospice of the Valley outreach builds trust with African Americans community

The Underground Railroad may no longer operate, but the strategies slaves developed more than 150 years ago to reach freedom help today's African-American community distinguish between institutions that claim concern and those that deliver.

Sr. Cooney, RSM, visionary leader of Alegent Health

Sr. Norita Cooney, RSM, 71, died March 7 at Mercy Villa in Omaha, Neb. She was president of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas West Midwest Community and a leader in the Catholic health ministry who was instrumental in the founding of Alegent Health.

Don't starve foundations during downturn, bolster them, experts say

Even though foundations in the ministry have taken a hit during the nation's economic downturn, that doesn't mean that hospitals and health systems should neglect these philanthropic arms.
